IELTS Fee in Pakistan 2026: Every Test, Both Providers, Every Extra Charge

The current IELTS fee in Pakistan for every version of the test, checked against British Council and IDP on 7 October 2026, plus transfer, refund and remark charges, how to register and pay, and how to prepare without paying for the test twice.

By Scoodemy team · 09 Oct 2026

The IELTS fee in Pakistan is PKR 76,240 if you sit the test in Lahore and most other Punjab centres, and PKR 75,600 in Islamabad, Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta or Mirpur — the same test, the same paper, the same Test Report Form, for a difference of PKR 640 that depends only on which city your test centre is in. That is the standard IELTS Academic or General Training test on computer, according to the British Council's pricing document effective 2 July 2026 and IDP's IELTS test fee page for Pakistan.

That headline number is the easy part. The expensive parts are the ones nobody mentions until it is too late: a date transfer that costs PKR 19,000 if you leave it a week too long, a refund that keeps a quarter of your money, a remark that costs more than half a new test, and the bank's advance tax on card payments that you never get back. And the headline itself is already in dispute on one point, because the British Council's own booking page and its own newer price sheet currently show two different fees for IELTS for UKVI.

This guide sets out every published figure from both test providers, side by side, with a link to where each one came from. Then it covers how registration and payment actually work from Pakistan, which version of the test you need for the UK, Canada and Australia, and how to prepare so that you pay the IELTS fee once rather than twice.

Accuracy note — read this first

Last verified: 7 October 2026 against British Council Pakistan and IDP Pakistan. Where this page and the test provider disagree, the provider is right.

IELTS fees in Pakistan have been revised several times in 2026 alone. The British Council has published separate price sheets effective 1 February, 9 June and 2 July 2026, and older documents stay online at their old addresses, so a search engine will happily serve you last year's fee as if it were current. Every figure on this page was taken from a page or document we opened on 7 October 2026, and each is linked.

Before you pay, check the fee shown in the booking system itself. That is the number you will actually be charged. If it differs from this page, tell us through contact us and we will correct it.

How this guide was put together

Scoodemy is a Pakistani tutoring marketplace. We are not an IELTS test centre, we are not a registration agent for the British Council or IDP, and we earn nothing from IELTS bookings. Nobody paid for a mention on this page and there are no affiliate links in it.

What we checked, on 7 October 2026:

What we left out, deliberately: pass rates, "average band score in Pakistan" figures and the like, because neither provider publishes them for Pakistan and we will not invent them; the fees of private IELTS preparation academies, because they vary too much to be useful; and anything we saw only on a third-party site, however confident it sounded.

The IELTS fee in Pakistan at a glance

Two organisations deliver IELTS in Pakistan: the British Council and IDP. They are both official IELTS partners, the test is identical, and the result is accepted in exactly the same way whichever one you book with. On the main test, their fees are also identical.

Test British Council (Punjab cities) British Council (Islamabad, Peshawar, Abbottabad, Karachi, Sukkur, Hyderabad, Quetta, Mirpur) IDP (Lahore, Faisalabad) IDP (Islamabad, Gujrat, Karachi, Hyderabad)

IELTS for UKVI on computer (Academic or General Training) PKR 78,820 PKR 78,820 PKR 78,820 PKR 78,820

Sources: British Council pricing document effective 2 July 2026; IDP IELTS test fee in Pakistan. The British Council's "Punjab cities" column covers Lahore, Multan, Sialkot, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Bahawalpur, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujranwala, Sahiwal, Gujrat and Jhelum. IDP's sheet places Gujrat in its lower-fee column alongside Islamabad, which is one small place where the two providers differ.

The UKVI and Life Skills discrepancy

There is one genuine conflict in the British Council's own material, and you should know about it before you budget.

The fee table on the British Council's booking page, which is headed "Effective from 9 June 2026", lists IELTS for UKVI on computer at PKR 72,000 and IELTS for UKVI Life Skills at PKR 50,000. The British Council's newer price sheet, effective 2 July 2026 and linked from its own refund policy page, lists them at PKR 78,820 and PKR 53,000. IDP's page also shows 78,820 and 53,000.

The most likely explanation is that the booking page table was not updated when the July prices took effect. We cannot confirm that, so the safe assumption is the higher figure. Budget for PKR 78,820 for UKVI and PKR 53,000 for Life Skills, and if the booking system asks for less, so much the better.

Is IELTS on paper still available in Pakistan?

For almost everyone, no. IDP states plainly on its fee page that IELTS on computer is now the only test format it offers in Pakistan. The British Council says on its dates and locations page that IELTS on paper is currently available only to candidates who have received special consideration approval on medical grounds, such as hearing, visual or speaking disabilities. IELTS for UKVI on paper was withdrawn in Pakistan from 1 October 2024, according to the British Council's UKVI page.

The British Council's price sheet still carries a line for the paper test at the same fee as the computer test. In practice, the choice between computer and paper that older guides spend paragraphs on no longer exists for a typical candidate in Pakistan. Plan to sit the test on a computer and practise accordingly.

Every extra charge, and when it applies

The registration fee is a one-off. These are the charges that catch people.

Date transfer fees

Both providers use the same rule. Transfer 15 or more days before your test and it is free. Transfer within 5 to 14 days and you pay an administrative fee of 25 percent of the test fee. Inside the final days you cannot transfer at all: the British Council says no transfers under 5 days and its price sheet says "within 4 days from test date", and either way a late transfer request is treated as a cancellation.

Transfer fee (5 to 14 days before the test) British Council IDP
IELTS Academic or General Training PKR 19,000 PKR 19,000
IELTS for UKVI PKR 19,700 PKR 19,700
IELTS Life Skills PKR 13,200 PKR 13,200

Sources: British Council cancellation, refund and transfer policy and price sheet; IDP fee page.

The practical lesson is simple. Put a reminder in your phone for 16 days before your test. If anything about your plans is uncertain on that day — a university deadline that may move, a family wedding, a semester exam that has not been scheduled yet — move the test then, for free, rather than gambling on PKR 19,000 a week later.

Cancellation and refund

Cancel 15 or more days before the test and you get 75 percent of the fee back; the other 25 percent is kept as an administrative fee. Cancel within 14 days and there is no refund. Both providers state this rule in the same terms.

Refund if cancelled 15+ days before the test British Council IDP
IELTS Academic or General Training PKR 57,200 (all regions) PKR 57,240 (Lahore, Faisalabad); PKR 56,600 (Islamabad, Gujrat, Karachi)
IELTS for UKVI PKR 59,200 PKR 59,120
IELTS Life Skills PKR 39,800 PKR 39,800

The two providers' refund figures differ by a few dozen rupees in places. We have reproduced each exactly as published rather than rounding them into agreement.

There are exceptions for genuine emergencies. The British Council accepts applications for "special consideration" for serious illness, bereavement, a domestic crisis, an unavoidable legal or military obligation, civil unrest or extreme weather. You can apply before the test or up to two calendar days after a missed test, with supporting evidence, and the centre says it will respond within seven working days. If approved, you get a transfer or a refund, sometimes subject to an administrative fee. The British Council also warns that refunds can take four to six weeks to process.

If the test centre cancels your test — because of weather, civil unrest, a technical failure or similar — you are offered a full refund or a free transfer.

The card payment tax that is never refunded

This one is specific to Pakistan and almost nobody mentions it. The British Council's dates and locations page explains that, under section 236Y of the Income Tax Ordinance 2001, international transactions made by credit or debit card are subject to an advance tax deducted by your bank: 1 percent for filers and 3 percent for non-filers. Because the British Council's card payments are settled through an international merchant, this tax applies. The British Council also states that if you later claim a refund, the advance tax deducted by the bank will not be refunded.

On a PKR 76,240 fee, that is roughly PKR 760 for a filer and roughly PKR 2,290 for a non-filer. The booking page adds that card transactions are settled in a foreign currency, so the amount on your statement can differ from the displayed fee because of exchange rate movement. If you are not a tax filer, paying by inter-bank transfer rather than card is the cheaper route.

Remark (Enquiry on Results) fees

If your result is lower than you expected, you can ask for one or more sections to be re-marked. This is called an Enquiry on Results, or EOR. The British Council's results page says you choose which sections to re-mark and apply at the centre where you sat the test.

Enquiry on Results fee British Council IDP
IELTS Academic or General Training (and One Skill Retake at IDP) PKR 39,650 PKR 40,500
IELTS for UKVI PKR 41,000 PKR 41,000
IELTS Life Skills PKR 27,550 PKR 27,550

This is the one fee where the two providers clearly differ, by PKR 850 on a standard test. Neither page we read sets out, for Pakistan, whether the EOR fee is returned if your band score goes up, so we have not claimed that it is. Ask the centre before you apply.

Before paying close to PKR 40,000 for a remark, be honest with yourself. A remark makes sense when one section is clearly out of line with the others and with your practice scores, especially Writing or Speaking, where human judgement is involved. It makes much less sense when every section came in about half a band below your target. In that case the money is usually better spent on preparation and a retake, or a One Skill Retake.

The British Council price sheet also lists a fee for "First Appeal/Second Appeal/Independent Review": PKR 107,155 for a standard test in Punjab and Islamabad, PKR 104,385 in Karachi, PKR 92,375 in Peshawar and Mirpur, and PKR 92,375 for UKVI and Life Skills. The pages we read do not explain the appeal process itself, so if you get that far, ask the test centre in writing what it involves before you pay.

Other small charges

The British Council's price sheet lists a centre change fee of PKR 1,150 to PKR 1,790 depending on which provinces you are moving between, and additional Test Report Forms at PKR 1,000 by Pakistan Post or between PKR 4,750 and PKR 5,550 by courier. Note, though, that the British Council's results page says hard-copy TRF requests are now considered only in exceptional circumstances, with evidence. For computer-delivered tests, the electronic Test Report Form in the Test Taker Portal is the normal route, and results can be sent to institutions directly from there.

The British Council also says its test fee includes access to its "IELTS Ready Premium" preparation pack and five extra Test Report Forms sent free of charge to institutions you are applying to.

Which IELTS do you actually need?

Booking the wrong version is the single most expensive mistake on this page, because it costs you the whole fee. Check with the organisation you are applying to before you book anything. The British Council's own guide to choosing a test says the same.

IELTS Academic is the usual choice for undergraduate and postgraduate admission at universities abroad, and for some professional registration bodies.

IELTS General Training is used mainly for migration and work. Canada's Express Entry is the clearest case: the Government of Canada's language testing page says you must take the General Training option, that results must be less than two years old when you create your profile and submit your application, and that it does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry.

IELTS for UKVI is the same test content as Academic or General Training, taken under the additional security that UK Visas and Immigration requires. The UK government's secure English language test guidance lists IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Life Skills as the approved IELTS tests, and states that results are valid for two years from the date the test is awarded.

Here is the nuance that saves Pakistani students money. For a UK Student visa at degree level or above, the UK government's knowledge of English page says your higher education provider can assess your English itself, provided it is equivalent to CEFR level B2. Many UK universities therefore accept the ordinary IELTS Academic for degree-level admission, and you may not need the UKVI version at all. Below degree level — a foundation year or pre-sessional course at some providers, for example — a SELT at CEFR B1 is required. Ask your university's admissions office, in writing, which version they want before paying the extra PKR 2,580 for UKVI. Equally, if they say UKVI, do not try to save money with the ordinary test.

IELTS for UKVI Life Skills tests speaking and listening only, at level A1 or B1. The UK SELT guidance lists citizenship and settlement among the applications that need only speaking and listening. The British Council offers Life Skills in Islamabad, Mirpur, Lahore and Karachi.

Australia accepts both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training, each including One Skill Retake, for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, according to the Department of Home Affairs' English language requirements page. The score you need depends on the visa subclass, so check the specific visa page.

How long an IELTS result stays valid

The IELTS partners recommend that a result be treated as evidence of English ability for a maximum of two years, because language skills decline without use. The UK and Canadian government pages above both work to two years. Individual universities and employers can set their own period, so check theirs. The practical point: do not book your test too early in a long application cycle, or you may pay the IELTS fee in Pakistan a second time simply because the first result expired.

IELTS registration in Pakistan, step by step

The process is broadly the same with either provider. This is the British Council version, from its booking page, with IDP differences noted.

  1. Get your identity document in order first. The British Council asks for a valid passport or national identity card. Whatever document you register with is the one you must bring on test day — the British Council's test day page says a candidate presenting any other ID will not be allowed to take the test — along with a coloured photocopy of it. If you are applying abroad, register with your passport, because that is the document your university or visa officer will match your result to. IDP's One Skill Retake guide also tells candidates to use the same valid passport they used for the original test.
  2. Under 18? You need written consent from a parent or guardian. The British Council also notes that IELTS is not recommended for test takers under 16.
  3. Choose the right test and city, then pick a date and a Speaking slot. On computer, the British Council lets you choose a Speaking slot on the main test day or within a week either side, if there is space.
  4. Pay. British Council options are inter-bank transfer (IBFT) through online banking or an ATM, which it describes as the most economical way; a cash deposit at Standard Chartered or MCB using its bank details; a bank draft payable to "British Council Pakistan"; or a credit card online. Cheques are not accepted. IDP accepts card payment online, cash at an IDP branch if you registered offline, or a bank transfer.
  5. Pay within the deadline. The British Council says payment must reach it within three days of registration and three days before your first exam component, whichever comes first. Its working days are Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Online payment for Academic or General Training made within working hours is confirmed the same day; UKVI and Life Skills online payments are confirmed the same or next working day; offline payments are confirmed the next working day.
  6. Watch for the confirmation email with your venue, start time and IELTS reference number, which gives you access to the Test Taker Portal. If no seat is available on your chosen date, the British Council says you will be moved to your next preferred date or the soonest available one. IDP says it sends a final confirmation five to seven days before the test and advises checking your spam folder.

Nothing in that process requires an agent. British Council exam registration and IDP registration are both done directly, online or at their own offices, and the fee is the same whoever submits the form. An "agent" who charges you anything on top of the official fee for booking a test you could have booked yourself in fifteen minutes is selling you nothing.

Where you can sit IELTS in Pakistan

On 7 October 2026 the British Council listed IELTS on computer in Abbottabad, Gujrat, Islamabad, Peshawar, Mirpur, Mardan, Swat, Bahawalpur, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Lahore, Multan, Sahiwal, Sargodha, Sialkot, Mandi Bahauddin, Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur and Quetta. Its city lists for IELTS for UKVI are not consistent across its own pages — the dates and locations page, the fee table and the UKVI page each name a slightly different set of cities — so confirm UKVI availability for your city in the booking system rather than relying on any one list. IDP's fee table covers Lahore, Faisalabad, Islamabad, Gujrat, Karachi and Hyderabad.

When to book

The British Council says that with IELTS on computer you can often book as late as two to three days before registration closes, and that there are test dates throughout the week. That is true in a quiet month. In peak season, which for Pakistani students tends to be the months before UK and Canadian intake deadlines, popular centres fill up. Book once you have a realistic target date and at least a few weeks of preparation behind you — and, remembering the transfer rule, not so early that a change of plan costs you PKR 19,000.

Results timing

The British Council says computer-delivered results are usually available online within 24 to 48 hours, as an electronic Test Report Form in the Test Taker Portal. For IELTS for UKVI on computer it says results take one to five days. One Skill Retake results take three to five days, according to ielts.org.

One Skill Retake in Pakistan

One Skill Retake lets you resit just one section — Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking — instead of the whole test. It is available in Pakistan: the British Council's One Skill Retake page offers it for IELTS Academic and General Training on computer and for IELTS for UKVI on computer, and IDP publishes a fee for it.

The rules, from ielts.org and the British Council:

  • Your original full test must have been IELTS on computer, at a centre that offers One Skill Retake.
  • You must take the retake within 60 days of your original test.
  • You can retake only one skill, once, per original test.
  • You receive a new Test Report Form showing the retake score alongside your original scores. The British Council says the result is valid for two years from the original test date.
  • Your other three scores do not change.

At IDP's PKR 47,630 to PKR 48,050, a retake costs about 63 percent of a full test. That is a real saving when one section — usually Writing — is the only thing standing between you and your target.

But check acceptance first. ielts.org itself recommends confirming with the organisation that it accepts One Skill Retake before you book. Canada's Express Entry does not. Australia's Home Affairs does. Many universities do, but "many" is not "yours".

How the IELTS band score works

Each of the four sections is scored on a band from 0 to 9, in whole or half bands. Your overall IELTS band score is the average of the four, rounded. According to ielts.org's scoring guide, an average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band. Its worked example: Listening 6.5, Reading 6.5, Writing 5.0 and Speaking 7.0 average 6.25, which becomes an overall 6.5.

Two things follow. First, many offers and visas set a minimum in each section as well as overall, so a strong overall score can still fail you on one weak section. Second, Writing and Speaking are marked by trained examiners against published criteria. The official Writing band descriptors and Speaking band descriptors are free to download. Read them before you write a single practice essay. They tell you exactly what separates a 6 from a 7, which no coaching banner does.

Fake agents, "guaranteed bands" and leaked papers

Every year, Pakistani students lose money to people promising an IELTS result without the work. The offers take a few familiar shapes: a guaranteed band score for a fee, a certificate without sitting the test, "leaked" questions for next Saturday's paper, or a "registration agent" who collects the fee and disappears.

The official position is unambiguous. ielts.org's test security page tells test takers not to trust anyone trying to sell IELTS results or test papers, and describes biometric registration and staff trained to identify imposters. IDP's warning about IELTS scams says that anyone claiming to sell you an IELTS certificate is trying to scam you, and that people who use a fake certificate risk having their results rejected, being banned from IELTS and being reported to the authorities. It names WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and similar platforms as places these offers circulate, and gives an address for reporting them: security.ielts@idp.com.

Three rules keep you safe:

  1. Pay only the British Council or IDP, through the payment routes on their own websites or at their own offices. Nobody else needs your fee.
  2. No one can guarantee a band score. Writing and Speaking are marked by examiners against public criteria; a coaching centre has no say in the result.
  3. Verify every result through official channels. Universities and visa authorities do, and a fake result is not a shortcut but a permanent record of fraud.

IELTS preparation in Pakistan without wasting money

With the IELTS fee in Pakistan at PKR 75,600 or more per attempt, the cheapest IELTS is the one you only sit once. That makes preparation a financial decision as much as an academic one.

Start with the free official material. The British Council includes its IELTS Ready Premium preparation pack with every booking, which it says contains more than 40 practice tests, model answers and feedback. Both providers publish free practice material, and the band descriptors are free. You do not need to buy a stack of photocopied books from Urdu Bazaar before you have used these.

Take a timed, full practice test before you book. On a computer, in one sitting, with the official time limits. This gives you an honest baseline. If you are more than a band below your target, book a date further out; if you are at or above it in practice, you may need only a few weeks of polishing.

Practise on a computer. Since the test is computer-delivered for almost all candidates in Pakistan, practise typing your Writing answers, not handwriting them. Typing speed, the on-screen word count and reading long passages on a screen are all skills, and the British Council publishes familiarisation tests for exactly this reason.

Spend most of your time on your weakest section, especially Writing. Listening and Reading usually respond quickly to practice, because they are about familiarity with the question types and the time limit. Writing and Speaking improve more slowly and need feedback from someone who knows the band descriptors. Study methods that actually work — retrieval, spaced practice and testing yourself rather than rereading — are set out in our guide to how to study effectively, and they apply to IELTS as much as to board exams.

Get feedback on Writing and Speaking before test day, not after. This is where a teacher genuinely earns their fee. A self-taught candidate can drill Listening alone; very few people can mark their own Task 2 essay against the Lexical Resource criterion with any honesty. If that is your gap, a few sessions with a good English tutor marking your essays and running mock speaking tests is likely to cost less than a single retake. You can find an English or IELTS tutor by city or for online lessons, or read how Scoodemy works first. We would rather you used the free material and a tutor for feedback than paid for a large package you do not need.

Be realistic about timing and money together. If you are applying for funded study abroad, the IELTS fee is often a cost you must cover before any scholarship pays out. Our scholarships in Pakistan guide sets out the main funded programmes and where their deadlines are published; check each one's English requirement and plan your test date around it instead of panic-booking the week before.

Mistakes that cost Pakistani candidates a second fee

  • Booking the wrong version. Academic when the visa needed General Training, or ordinary Academic when the university specifically asked for UKVI.
  • Registering with a CNIC and turning up with a passport, or the other way round. The ID on the day must match the ID on the booking.
  • Missing the 15-day window. A transfer on day 16 is free; on day 14 it is PKR 19,000; inside the final days it is a cancellation with no refund.
  • Paying by card as a non-filer without realising the 3 percent advance tax, which is not refunded if you cancel.
  • Booking too early in a long application cycle, so that the result is more than two years old when the visa or admission decision is made.
  • Booking a One Skill Retake for a route that does not accept it, such as Canadian Express Entry.
  • Paying an agent. The official fee is the whole fee.

Frequently asked questions

What is the IELTS fee in Pakistan in 2026?

For IELTS Academic or General Training on computer, PKR 76,240 in Lahore and most other Punjab centres (IDP charges the lower fee in Gujrat) and PKR 75,600 in Islamabad, Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta, Mirpur and the other non-Punjab centres. IELTS for UKVI is PKR 78,820 and Life Skills PKR 53,000 under the British Council's 2 July 2026 price sheet and IDP's current fee page. These figures were checked on 7 October 2026; confirm them in the booking system before you pay.

Is the IELTS fee cheaper with IDP or the British Council?

For the main test, no: both charge PKR 76,240 or PKR 75,600 depending on city, and the UKVI and Life Skills fees match as well. They differ slightly on extras. The British Council's remark fee for a standard test is PKR 39,650 against IDP's PKR 40,500, and their published refund amounts differ by small sums. IDP publishes a One Skill Retake fee; the British Council documents we checked did not.

Can I pay the IELTS fee in Pakistan without a credit card?

Yes. The British Council accepts inter-bank transfer through online banking or an ATM, cash deposit at Standard Chartered or MCB, and bank drafts. IDP accepts cash at its branches if you registered offline and bank transfer. Paying without a card also avoids the 1 to 3 percent advance tax on international card transactions.

Can I take IELTS on paper in Pakistan?

Generally not. IDP offers only IELTS on computer in Pakistan. The British Council offers paper only to candidates with approved special consideration on medical grounds, and IELTS for UKVI on paper has not been offered in Pakistan since 1 October 2024.

Do I need IELTS for UKVI to study in the UK?

Not always. For degree-level study, the UK government allows your university to assess your English itself, so many universities accept the ordinary IELTS Academic. Below degree level, a Secure English Language Test such as IELTS for UKVI is required. Ask your university in writing before you book.

How soon will I get my IELTS result?

For the standard computer-delivered test, the British Council says usually within 24 to 48 hours online. For IELTS for UKVI on computer, one to five days. For a One Skill Retake, three to five days.

How long is an IELTS result valid?

The IELTS partners recommend a maximum of two years, and the UK and Canadian immigration rules both use two years. Some organisations set their own period, so check with the one you are applying to.

What happens if I miss my test?

Without an approved special consideration case, the fee is lost: a cancellation within 14 days of the test has no refund. If you were ill or faced a genuine emergency, apply to the test centre with evidence before the test or within two calendar days after it.

About this guide

This guide was researched and written by the Scoodemy editorial team. Scoodemy is a Pakistani tutoring marketplace that connects students with verified tutors and runs structured online classes through its Virtual Academy. We are not an IELTS test centre or registration agent, and we earn nothing from any IELTS booking, which is why we can tell you that you do not need an agent at all.

Every fee and rule above was taken from the British Council Pakistan and IDP Pakistan pages and documents linked in this guide, and from ielts.org and government sources, all opened on 7 October 2026. Where the providers disagree, we have shown both figures. Where something was not published — a British Council One Skill Retake fee, whether a remark fee is refunded when a score changes, how an appeal works — we have said so rather than guessed. If you spot an error or a changed fee, tell us through contact us and we will correct it.
